Architectures of Gender: Contemporary Women's Art in Poland is the first major introduction of contemporary Polish women artists to the New York art world. The exhibition is also the first group show of Polish art to be mounted in New York since 1976. Conceived and designed specifically for SculptureCenter by one of Europe's foremost curators of contemporary art, Aneta Szylak, it brings together the most significant aspects, both ideological and formal, of women's art in Poland today. SculptureCenter, in its dramatic new space, will host 16 artists, many of whom have never exhibited in the United States before. The exhibition will be augmented by an artists' roundtable, a major panel, a curator's talk, and screenings of film and video works, as well as a catalogue with in-depth essays on the exhibition itself and on its broader context in the history of Polish feminism, which developed under socio-political conditions entirely different from those in America. For press information and photos, contact cascenzo@sculpture-center.org, or mail@polishculture-nyc.org Architectures of Gender: Contemporary Women's Art in Poland, curated by Aneta Szylak, is co-presented by SculptureCenter and the Polish Cultural Institute in New York in association with the National Museum in Warsaw. The exhibition was sponsored by the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Poland, LOT Polish Airlines, LOT Cargo and Polska Wytwórnia Papierów Wartosciowych, Warsaw. Special thanks to the City of New York/Parks & Recreation for their support of Julita Wojcik's project. Research and development by Ms. Aneta Szylak was made possible in part by International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York.
