Witkiewicz, who was practically ignored in his time and left no direct disciples, now bestrides the avant-garde like a colossus, mysteriously arousing more excitement in young playwrights than practically any other 20th-century writer. These selections are newly revised translations based on the latest corrected Polish edition of Witkiewicz's work. They include The Pragmatists, Tumor Brainiowicz, Gyubal Wahazar, The Anonymous Work, The Cuttlefish, Dainty Shapes and Hairy Apes, or The Green Pill, and The Beelzebub Sonata. The book includes an Introduction by Daniel Gerould, his introductory remarks for each play, and two essays on theater by Witkiewicz himself, who was an important theatre and art theorist: "Theoretical Preface" and "A Few Words about the Role of the Actor in the Theatre of Pure Form."
