Jewish monthly Midrasz publishes its 4th periodic issue in English featuring highlights from the last few years

Saturday, January 1, 2005 - Saturday, December 31, 2005

Warsaw, Poland

An English edition of "The Best of..." Midrasz, a selection of articles since 1993 deemed most interesting by the editors, has just been published. It is the fourth such special English-language issue since the Jewish monthly was launched in 1997 to fill a long-standing gap that had prevailed in Poland since the immediate post-war period, and especially since the anti-Semitic campaign of 1968, in news, commentary, and literature for and about the Jewish community and beyond - a monthly, that is, as publisher Konstanty Gebert puts it, for people interested in Jewish life, history, and culture "be they Jewish or not". Midrasz is intended primarily to serve three main groups: Polish Jews who are active in existing communal organizations (a group numbering no more than seven thousand mostly elderly people); non-Jewish Poles interested in Poland's Jewish heritage; and most importantly for the editors, the growing number of Poles of Jewish origin, currently estimated at around 25,000, who have taken an interest in their Jewish roots. The readership is international as well, and the periodic issues in English are aimed at those who do not read Polish but are interested in Jewish life in Poland. The 2005 English edition, dedicated to the late teacher, Joy Rochwarger-Balsam (1967-2004), was sponsored by Sigmund Rolat, the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture, and the Jewish Heritage Initiative in Poland. For subscription and other information visit
