Zbigniew Rogalski (b. 1974) moves with great ease between painting and photography, combining them and exploring their respective essential properties. Reflexes, after-images, film stills, and photographs overlap the image of reality, as if in a specially constructed optic machine which retains on the surface of the canvas the emotions and meanings which normally are no more permanent than a drawing on a steamed-up glass. The surface of the painting becomes, momentarily, a screen, on which the obsessions, fears and revelations of our consciousness are projected. Rogalski succeeds in restoring a visionary element in painting. A number of his works allude to the classic genres of painting, such as portrait or landscape. However, by interweaving different clichés and conventions of representation, Rogalski is led to surprisingly essential painterly solutions.
Zbigniew Rogalski graduated from the Poznan Academy of Fine Arts, Painting Department in 1999. He worked as an Assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (2004-2005). Together with Hubert Czerepok formed Magisters group (2000-2002), and since 2006 he has collaborated artistically with Michal Budny. He lives and works in Warsaw.
Rogalski has had solo exhibitions at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw; Zak Branicka Gallery, Berlin; Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco; Galerie Almine Rech, Paris; Sprüth Magers Projekte, Munich; Kunsthalle Mannheim; the Goettinger Kunstverein; the Raster Gallery and the Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw.
He has shown in numerous group exhibitions, including SITE Santa Fe's Seventh International Biennial; the Marx Collection at Berlin's Hamburger Bahnhof; the Rubell Family Collection in Miami; and Prague Biennale 2; as well as at the Museum of Art in Lodz, Krinzinger Projekte in Vienna; the École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Grote Kerk in The Hague; Galerie Ruediger Schuettle, Munich and Cologne and National Centre for Contemporay Arts in Moscow.
Zbigniew Rogalski residency is presented in association with the Polish Cultural Institute in New York within its Poland-U.S. Artists-In-Residence Exchange Program, organized by a-i-r laboratory at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Poland and Headlands Center for the Arts, with generous support of the Trust for Mutual Understanding and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland.
