International Conference on Artistic Residencies
First Eastern European Res Artis Meeting

Monday, November 16, 2009 - Thursday, November 19, 2009

Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle
a-i-r laboratory programme
ul. Jazdow 2, Warsaw, Poland
Tel: +48 (22) 628.12.71-3 ext. 131

The Re-Tooling Residencies conference will be held in Warsaw during the opening of the International Centre for Artistic Exchange at the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) Ujazdowski Castle, which is home of the CCA artist-in-residency (a-i-r laboratory) program's new studios. The conference is also the first Eastern-European meeting of Res Artis, the worldwide network of artist residencies and residential art centers.

Organized by the artists-in-residence laboratory programme, the 'Re-tooling Residencies' conference will provide a platform for the critical reworking of existing and emerging residency models. It will present different strategies for residencies: production, interdisciplinary collaboration, the development of local cultural scenes, etc. Invited specialists will lead workshops on fundraising, administration, and inter-institutional cooperation. The conference will provide learning opportunities for a large group of established and emerging European a-i-r programs and will enable participants to launch new collaborations. Through its study and research program, a related 'Re-Tooling Residency' project will foster theoretical and practical knowledge for professionals who wish to initiate residency programs in countries where artist residencies are less established.

Conference guests will include artist-in-residency programs from Albania, Armenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey, as well as guests from Western Europe and other parts of the world.

Conference participants will include representatives of arts organizations and institutions from Europe and the U.S., such as: Art in General, CEC ArtsLink, Polish Culture Institute in New York, and Trust for Mutual Understanding (USA); Akademie Schloss Solitude and DAAD Berliner K├╝nstlerprogramm (Germany); Res Artis and Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Netherlands); Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Spain); Nordic Residency Program (Sweden/Finland); Pro Helvetia Programme in the Western Balkans (Switzerland); the European Comission; UNESCO; and International Visegrad Fund (Czech Republic/Hungary/Poland/Slovakia); as well as the a-i-r laboratory at CCA Zamek Ujazdowski.
