Marzena Nowak

Thursday, October 30, 2014 - Sunday, November 30, 2014

Marzena Nowak is a multimedia artist, filmmaker and a painter. Her work investigates privacy, memory as well as various intellectual and psychological processes. Nowak's oeuvre explores the territory somewhere between autobiography and poetically engrossed dream worlds. Her sensitivity to everyday events and objects in relation to human physicality often pushes her artistic practice into abstraction. Subtle yet structurally precise, Nowak's work is intense with emotion through the use of her body's repetitive motions as well as the portrayal of her subjective experience. She seamlessly maneuvers between artistic mediums of photography, film, installation and painting. In her film work Nowak plays with the tension between self-expression and the societal norms. Through the use of her body she plays with corporeal closeness and distance, pain and tenderness, freedom and loss of control as a means of exploring sociocultural notions.

Marzena Nowak, born in 1977 lives and works in Warsaw, Poland. She studied painting at the Warsaw Academy of Art under the direction of Leon Tarasewicz. Nowaks work has been exhibited around Europe including the Venice Biennale in 2003 on the occasion of Absolut Generations a group exhibition organized by Miroslaw Balka. Other museums and galleries where she has presented her work include MUMOK Vienna, Museum of Contemporary Art in Warsaw, Poland, Dvir Gallery in Tel Aviv, and Künstlerhaus in Vienna among others.

The Polish-American artist-in-residence program is presented by the Polish Cultural Institute New York, ISCP New York City and A.I.R Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw
