Dominik Lejman, a major talent of the younger generation in Polish contemporary art, who attracted international attention with his innovative multiple layering of painting and video projections as well as the new formal idea of video, was commissioned by RxArt, a not-for-profit corporation, as an outcome of his recent 4-month residency in 2003 at Location One, to create a permanent video installation for the Schneider Children's Hospital in New York. The purpose of the installation, like the stated goal of RxArt, is to make white hospital walls more inviting and comforting through art, and thus (as evidence suggests) even healing. Animating Spaces consists of more than a dozen day-light video projections showing different species of animals - carefully positioned by the artist in spatially appropriate sites throughout the hospital, in a way that delights the children without impinging upon the priorities of hospital activity. Only the lobby and certain corridors will generally be open for viewing by the public.
