POLISH ART 1955-1985

Friday, March 1, 2002 - Friday, May 31, 2002

Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, CSU
5500 University Parkway, San Bernardino, CA

Two of the finest collections representing Polish art of the second half of the 20th century happen to have their homes in Southern California, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and in the home of Hanna Dowoyna Sylwestrowicz and Bohdan W. Oppenheim in Santa Monica. Selected works from these two collections constitute the core of this exhibition, curated by Eva Kirsch, which presents about 50 works by over 30 Polish artists, from the post-Stalinist thaw in the latter 1950s to the uncertain stalemate in the middle 1980s that followed Solidarity and martial law but preceded the partially-free breakthrough elections of 1989. In the Southern California collections, the major trends of the period of remarkable cultural ferment in Poland are well represented, with works by such world-renowned artists as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Tadeusz Brzozowski, Wojciech Fangor, Tadeusz Kantor, Jan Lebenstein, Jerzy Nowosielski, and Henryk Stazewski. While the exhibition provides context through both image and text on Polish art in the '50s and '80s, its main emphasis is on the two most experimental and intriguing decades, the 1960s and 1970s, with painting especially well represented.

This is the first of several presentations dedicated to Central European art that are planned by the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum.
