Hubert Czerepok, was born 1973 in Slubice in Poland, a town near the Polish-German border. A 1993 graduate of the famous Antoni Kenar's College of Fine Arts in Zakopane, in 1999 he received his MFA in sculpture and drawing from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland. In 2001 he took part in a Research Program at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, Norway. In the years 2000-2002 he formed the artistic duo "Magisters" with Zbigniew Rogalski, the artist active in Warsaw. In 2002-2003 he was a researcher at the Fine Arts Department of the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Currently he attends HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts) in Antwerp, Belgium. His stay in New York City is part of his residency program at HISK. Czerepok has shown his work in Poland, The Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, and Germany.
Hubert Czerepok explores the connections between fiction and truth in the telling of history through the media of drawing, painting, photography, installation, and video. It is not the facts themselves that interest the artist, but rather the ways in which they mutate and undergo formal and semantic transformations. His works consider themes of war, imprisonment, peculiar events like UFO sightings, the institution of the museum, the state of the art world in Poland, and the idea that history can only be represented through distortion. He currently lives and works in Warsaw.
