JarosBaw FliciDski, Faites vos Jeux #45, oil on canvas, 2002

Born 1965 in Gdansk, Poland. Lives and works in Gdansk

Jaroslaw Flicinski is considered one of Poland's outstanding painters, but he freely uses other media as well. He is one of those artists who seek ways to harmonize contemporary painting with present times. Since the very beginning of his practice he has been tackling the issue of the demarcation line between works that continue - and those that have ceased - to be painting. The borders of the medium have never been a burden for him, beginning with the frameless frame of his paintings - whether painted on canvas, plaster board, plywood, or directly on walls.

In the earlier paintings from the 1990s he used the repetition of motifs such as circles, lines, stripes, and surfaces, or serial patterns of flowers or stars. He also began to adapt the painting to a given spatial dimension and to think of its place in terms of real space. His paintings from the series Jumps into the water were placed beside a swimming pool. The pictures from the series Flowers & Stars appeared as the background of his video films. Some of the paintings from the series Fait vos jeux were painted straight onto the walls.

From the beginning of this decade his painting has gone beyond the range of the canvas to surround the viewer as in a kind of environment. He started to transform or modify the entire exhibition space in accordance with the encountered situation. The painting appears as an inseparable element of the space, corresponding with the other paintings, with the architecture, and with the historic details of that space, as in his exhibition Far away at Badisher Kunstverein in Karlsruhe (2000). His exhibition settings also embrace video projection. Within the framework of his exhibition project at the Center for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw (2003) he displayed colorful horizontal stripes spread across over 20 meters of the wall, as well as a film showing a little disc on a beach, pushed by the wind over several hundred meters.
