LUKASZ SKAPSKI (b. 1958) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow where he now teaches. He creates photography, painting, installations, and films. His work varies stylistically but its common feature is the artist's enormous interest in everyday reality and at the same time his distance from it, as well as a sense of humor often mixed with irony. Skapski mixes a minimalist approach to the medium with generalizations about concrete happenings or views. Lukasz Skapski is also a founding member of the AZORRO GROUP, well known in Poland and abroad for the playful mockery in their approach to art. He lives and works in Krakow.
His works has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, among them in Raster Gallery in Warsaw; SparwasserHQ in Berlin (2004); Bunkier Sztuki in Krakow; Paula Boettcher Gallery and Deutscher Kunstlerbund, Berlin (2003); Museum of History of Photography in Krakow, CSW Laznia in Gdansk, Arsenal Gallery in Bialystok, Raster Gallery in Warsaw, Poland (2002); Atelier des Images et Arts Plastiques in Lille, France (2001); Globe Gallery in Newcastle, Peer in London (2000).
He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including those at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, The National Museum of Art in Osaka, Modern Art Museum in Nagasaki, Japan; College Art Association in Atlanta, GA, US; Centre for Contemporary Art "Zamek Ujazdowski" and Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw, Bunkier Sztuki in Krakow, Arsenal in Bialystok, Poland (all in 2005); "New Video, New Europe" at The Renaissance Society in Chicago, IL, Museum of Contemporary Art in St. Louis, Tate Gallery in London, "Videozone" 2nd international video-art biennial in Tel Aviv, Israel; Kunstverein in Essen, Germany; Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint-Étienne, France; Kiasma Museum in Helsinki, Finnalnd (2004); Prague Biennale 1 in Prague, Czech Republic; Museum Moderner Kunst, Ludwig Stiftung in Wien, Austria (with Azorro), Transmediale 03 in Berlin, Germany (2003).
